Roy Edwin Swanson, age 91, passed away at Miller's Merry Manor in Culver, Indiana, on Tuesday, February 3, 2009. He resided at 10933 West 17th Road, Argos, Indiana, with his wife Dorothy Swanson, who survives. On March 5, 1917, Roy was born to David and Lydia Swanson of Grovertown, Indiana. He was a 1936 graduate of Grovertown High School and a 1940 graduate of Purdue University, where he majored in Poultry and Agriculture. In August of 1940, Roy married his high school sweetheart, Emily Waclaw, who preceded him in death in 1979. They came to Marshall County and resided at 5319 Plymouth-LaPorte Trail, Plymouth, Indiana, to start farming and to build a poultry hatching business, which eventually became one of the largest poultry operations, in Indiana. Roy worked hard developing his farm and raising and hatching chickens, until 1967, when he began to transform his farmland into a golf course. This eventually became Swan Lake Golf Club and United States Golf Academy, which the Swanson family owned and operated until the business was sold, in 2000. Roy had a keen interest in construction and enjoyed building. He built several homes, including his own, as well as chicken coops, hatcheries, and all the original buildings for the golf course and the academy. He was instrumental in building the Sunday school wing of the former EUB Church, of which he was a member. He also built the education wing of Grace Baptist Church and went on several mission trips, to Honduras, doing construction work there. Roy was an avid traveler. His travels took him to all 50 states, in the United States, and all the way around the globe. In 1962, he went on an agricultural tour with Purdue University to Russia, Poland, and several European countries. Some later journeys included trips to the Panama Canal, several Central and South American countries, Israel, Egypt, China, New Zealand, Spain, and his parent's homeland of Sweden. After the death of his first wife, Emily, Roy married Dorothy Ferguson, of Argos, in 1980. 2009 marks their 29th wedding anniversary. Roy was an active, dedicated member of Grace Baptist Church for several years. He was a long time Gideon, passing out New Testaments to school children across the state of Indiana. He had a real concern for mission work and spreading the gospel. Surviving Roy is his loving wife, Dorothy Swanson of Argos; his brother, Norman Swanson of Grovertown; his daughter, Lynette Kross of Plymouth; his daughter, Felicia (Mark) Batman of Plymouth, and their children Luke, Emily, and Matthew; Roy's daughter-in-law, Linda Swanson of Tennessee; his grandson, David (Yoonhae) Swanson and their sons, Noah and Zachary of Fishers, Indiana; his granddaughter, Melinda (James) Krass and their sons, Aiden, Elliot, and Rowan of Nappanee, Indiana; his step-sons, John (Elaine) Ferguson of Argos and their sons, Eric and Gregg; Jerry (Karen) Ferguson of Wisconsin and their daughter, Jean; and Jim (Rhonda) Ferguson of Argos and their son, Seth.
Roy was preceded in death by his son, Roger Swanson in 2003.
